The QPS welcomes applications from previous serving QPS officers wishing to re-join the organisation.

  • FAQs - RACE Eligible (2 years or less since separation)

    What is RACE?

The Re-Joiner Accelerated Competency Education (RACE) pathway is a recruitment stream targeting returning Queensland Police Officers.

This program involves successful applicants undertaking an accelerated Recruit Program within the allocated District via a Development Plan.

  • Who is eligible to be recruited under the RACE Stream?

To be eligible, the applicant must:

    • Be a person who is separated from QPS for a period up to two (2) years
    • Have recency in front-line General Duties policing
    • Have completed a minimum of 3 years full time frontline policing experience
    • Commit to perform frontline general duties policing
    • Be physically and psychologically capable to undertake the duties of a frontline general duties policing officer
    • Demonstrate integrity and commitment; and
    • Successfully undertake training and/or re-qualify to perform frontline general duties policing skills in a timely manner and maintain the required skills in compliance with QPS requirements.

Will I need to return to General Duties?

QPS currently recruits for general duties officers. Unless otherwise approved by the Commissioner, you will be allocated to a station as a general duties officer if successful in gaining re-admission.

You will be required to complete any outstanding tenure period if you were undertaking general duties before separation. If you were in a position other than general duties before your separation from the QPS, you will be allocated to a general duties position subject to the operational requirements of the Service.

What happens when a RACE applicant is successfully recruited?

Successful applicants will be provided with a ‘Letter of Offer” on the basis of full-time employment.

The successful applicant will commence at a designated station and be trained by the District as a Recruit. When training is completed and they are officially sworn-in as a Constable, the officer will undertaking general duties shifts. Their responsibilities are consistent with the ‘Key Accountabilities’ for a general duties Constable/Senior Constable (GDO01).

The recruit cannot use police powers or wear accoutrements until they have been sworn in as a police officer.

The Commissioner will have an unqualified power to revoke or vary the appointment of a RACE applicant/appointee by written notice.

As a RACE applicant, where will I be allocated?

During the application process the applicant will nominate preferred stations and Districts. The Recruiting Team will determine from the nominated District whether a vacancy exists. Once this is determined the applicant will be notified of the vacancy. Upon acceptance, and successful completion of the remaining recruitment stages, this then becomes the applicant’s station.

When will I commence as a RACE Recruit?

At the successful conclusion of the recruitment process, a commencement date will be agreed upon in consultation with the allocated District.

What training will the RACE Recruit be required to complete?

The OIC, in consultation with PCAP, will be responsible for ensuring the initial training and development is delivered in a consistent manner to ensure the Recruit can perform frontline general duties policing. This will be undertaken on a case-by-case basis utilising a personal development plan, as determined by the District. This process is the same as for Special Constables (State officers), with the exception of these applicants starting as a recruit, rather than via a Letter of Appointment, before being sworn in.

The training strategies (if required) may include:

    • Operational Skills Training (OST)
    • Mandatory and relevant OLPs
    • Domestic Violence Training
    • Any other training deemed necessary.

Upon successful completion of the personal development plan, a time will be arranged to “swear” the applicant in as a Constable.

    What is the remuneration package?

At the time of engagement, successful applicants will be provided with a ‘Letter of Appointment’ that applies conditions as outlined in a Commissioner’s Direction issued by the Commissioner in accordance with the Police Service Administration Act 1990.

Officers that can demonstrate no loss of relevant Queensland policing skills and knowledge may be offered a pay point at the same level as the time of separation, up to a maximum of Senior Constable 2.10. Successful completion of the probation period (12 months from the time of being sworn-in), the officer may resume the rank they previously occupied up to Senior Constable 2.10.

The pay level will consider a range of factors including, but limited to, length of policing service, relevancy and type of policing experience, recency of policing service and rank. For example and subject to these factors, if you recently resigned and had 6 years policing experience, you may be eligible for Senior Constable pay level 2.2 while completing the recruit training.

Can a RACE applicant apply for their previous registered number to be their new employment number?

Yes, the QPS retains an officer's previous registered number which can be re-issued if the officer returns.

  • FAQs - PACE Eligible (2 to 5 years since separation)

What is the Police Abridged Competency Education (PACE) Program?

The Police Abridged Competency Education (PACE) Program is for applicants who have current or recent frontline policing experience. This program is a separate intake at the academy that runs for approximately 18 weeks. Officers will commence in the First Year Constable (FYC) Program. However, officers with policing experience may be afforded the opportunity to apply for early exit from the First Year Constable program.

To be eligible for the PACE Program you need to meet all of the following criteria:

    • Current or recently resigned police officer
    • Minimum of 2 years policing experience
    • Maximum of 5 years since resigning
    • Years of operational policing experience is greater than years since resigning.

Please note: Your suitability for the program will be determined during the application process.

  • Will I receive a higher pay point?

Your policing service is recognised through allocation of a higher pay point than that of a mainstream recruit applicant. The pay point is assessed based on the QPS Certified Agreement, having regard to the recency and relevancy of your policing service.

You may be paid at your determined pay point from the date of your commencement at the academy as a recruit.

If I receive a Senior Constable pay point, when will I attain Senior Constable rank?

After successful completion of the probation period (12 months from the time of being sworn-in), the officer may resume the rank they previously occupied up to Senior Constable 2.10.

    Where will I be allocated?

Location allocation is dependent on the operational requirements of the service at the time of offer. All applicants are given the opportunity to provide reasons as to why they require a specific district. You will find out your allocated district upon offer before commencement at the academy.

Note: Sunshine Coast district is not available for posting.
